Responsible Use of Antimicrobials in Pig Production
Antibiotics are important medicines, used under veterinary direction, to treat sick animals; they are an essential tool to protect pig health and welfare. The vet will ensure the treatment is responsible, that it is appropriate for the farm and the current health situation in the pigs being treated.
The RUMA guidelines for pig producers have been put together by the Pig Health and Welfare Council Antimicrobial Usage subgroup and includes practical advice and recommendations on how to use antibiotics responsibly to safeguard animal health and welfare, supporting the directions of the vet. When used in conjunction with optimum management on farm, these measures aim to preserve the effectiveness of antibiotics for use in human and animal medicine into the future.
